Sinking of the vessel GEORG BÜCHNER within the Polish territorial sea

At 19:53 hours VTS Gulf of Gdańsk received information that „Georg Büchner” had lost its buoyancy and the towing line has been cut. Finally approximately at 20:25 hours „Georg Büchner” sank in the position: 54° 55,871’N 018° 31,308’E (approximately 8,6 nautical miles NE from Cape of Rozewie). The Navigational Warning no.87/2013 has been published by the National Coordinator of Navigational Warnings (HOPN) in order to warn the vessels operating in the area of the wreck. Information is being broadcasted on the VHF radio and through the NAVTEX. Detailed position of wreck „Georg Büchner” and the depth of water above it will be known in the forthcoming days. Maritime Office in Gdynia is closely monitoring the situation in the wreck area and has commenced the explanatory proceeding with regard to the suspected pollution of the Polish sea areas. With this regard today the pollution response vessel „Kapitan Poinc” of the Maritime Search and Rescue Service has been sent on scene of the accident.

The investigation on the accident will be taken by the State Commission for Investigation of Maritime Accidents.
